Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education (OE) is any learning that happens outside the College, we use the medium of adventure sports to conduct this learning environment. Some of the many benefits of OE are:

  • Allows for the use of different teaching and learning methodologies
  • The introduction of cross-curricular activities between OE and other subjects the students may be studying.
  • Increased participation in sport in a non-competitive, mixed ability setting for both boys and girls
  • Introduces students to new forms of sports and leisure and recreational activities
  • Allows students to foster an appreciation of living a healthier lifestyle and the health related benefits to increased participation in sport
  • Raises awareness of the countryside, the environment and the wilderness and the wonderful opportunities that are to be had by using the outdoors as a classroom

Outdoor Education allows young people to develop skills in the following areas:Front Blossoms.jpg

  • Peer group learning
  • Self-development
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Self-esteem
  • Inter/Intra personnel skills
  • Social and personal development
  • Fitness levels

All the activities are dependent on the weather; therefore it is hard to give an exact date for when they will happen. The OE teachers plan all activities around the weather and because of the nature of this, they may change plans at any time.

It is envisaged that all the students of the course of a year will get to try the following:

  • Hill walking
  • Orienteering
  • Scrambling
  • Rock-climbing (Indoor/Outdoor)
  • Camp craft
  • Canoeing
  • Environmental activities
  • Gorge walking
  • Urban adventuring
  • Swimming
